That being said, it seems likely that Contraband will end up being a centerpiece of one of Xbox's future showcase events. As such, we haven't yet seen how Contraband will even play just yet. When the title was first unveiled last year, it was only divulged via a trailer that essentially just revealed the name of the game. Today, at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, we finally announced what our team has been working on, Contraband. Perhaps the biggest question surrounding Contraband, other than its launch window, comes with its gameplay. When originally announced, Avalanche Studios and Xbox both didn't commit to a launch window whatsoever for Contraband, though, which means that this "delay" is one that won't be publicly announced. However, the project ended up being delayed internally and now isn't going to release until sometime in 2023 instead. According to both hosts, they originally heard that Contraband was supposed to launch at a time in 2022. There’s not much hard info yet, but we’ll have more as it develops.In the latest episode of The Xbox Two podcast, hosts Rand al Thor 19 and Jez Corden talked a bit about Contraband and when it could arrive. The camera moves to show off some of the possible items in question scattered about, plus a frozen shot of someone lying underneath a car as sparks fly, which might indicate that the vehicle customization seen in Mad Max might return in some form. Polaroid photos are suspended from a wire, hinting the co-op and open-world elements. Then, the camera pans to reveal a map with model cars on it and notes showing a route for optimal smuggling. The Contraband trailer begins by announcing that the game is being made as a collaboration between Xbox Games Studios and Avalanche, before showing some equipment scattered on tables. The game will make use of the company’s own Apex engine, which we’ve seen in previous games such as Just Cause 4. While there isn’t much to go on, the announcement trailer offers a few brief hints at what we might be able to expect. There’s not much info on what the game is exactly, but it’s described as a co-op smuggling game, so it will probably task players with navigating an open world to successfully move the titular goods across a map. The game takes place in the ’70s in a fictional place called Bayan. Every other game they’ve made has been set in an open world.Ĭontraband, despite being co-op, is also set in an open world.
